The Transpersonal Psychology Journey
Transpersonal psychology is gaining momentum in the field of emotional healing, reduction of stress and anxiety, promoting a true transformation and unleashing our hidden potential. Deeply rooted in the work and vision of Carl Jung, this approach to coaching, or therapy, can facilitate communication between our analytical and our creative minds. It empowers clients to better understand perceived obstacles or limitations, and to make the necessary changes to overcome these by using their creative potential to the fullest.
In a transpersonal coaching context, the client is the hero of her own story allowing her to access her truth and be transformed by it. Transpersonal coaches take every precaution to facilitate a relaxed, semi-conscious state, where our own answers await.
The adventure of tapping into our own creative powers with the help of a coach, can be put into words using an ancient Greek myth as an allegory-the Labyrinth of Minos:
Ariadne, daughter of King Minos, supplies that simple clue that will give her beloved Theseus the chance to survive his encounter with the Minotaur, and find his way to freedom. When she asks Daedalus for help, he presents her with a skein of linen thread. It is in this way that the transpersonal coach sends a client into her labyrinth of untapped resources. The coach holds the liminal space as Ariadne would hold one end of the thread. In the words of Stanislav Grof, M.D., Ph.D., author of Psychology of the Future, “The deep inner intelligence of the client guides the process of healing and transformation.”
When I hold the space for a client on a quest for self-knowledge, I spin a strong yarn she can hold on to, using her own strengths, vision and sense of purpose. We can hold onto it with full confidence that we can access information which will open and expand our thinking.
A journey that seeks to connect us to the world around us, to love, health and strength, can only have a positive outcome. Joseph Campbell, eloquently describes this kind of journey of self-discovery: “We have not even to risk the adventure alone; for the heroes of all time have gone before us; the labyrinth is thoroughly known; we have only to follow the thread of the hero-path. We shall come to the center of our own existence; where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.”
